Crews of Manila Electric Co., or Meralco, are working round-the-clock to restore electricity in areas hit by heavy rains and flooding from the enhanced southwest monsoon, with around 49,000 customers still experiencing service interruptions as of 4 p.m. Sunday.
The Manila Electric Company said the affected customers account for less than 1 percent of its total customer base, with most of the outages reported in parts of Cavite, Bulacan, and Metro Manila.
Close to half of those affected are in flooded areas, where restoration work cannot simply be rushed. Meralco said crews must wait until conditions are safe before repairing damaged facilities and reconnecting electricity.
In Valenzuela City, Meralco personnel were conducting restoration work as the utility continued deploying crews across its franchise area.
“Our crews are working round-the-clock to attend to electricity service concerns and restore power service to affected areas as soon as possible and once it is safe to do so,” said Joe R. Zaldarriaga, Meralco vice president and head of corporate communications.
He appealed for customers’ understanding as the company balances the need to restore service quickly with the safety of both residents and field personnel.
Meralco also warned the public to stay away from downed power lines, damaged electrical facilities, and electrical equipment that may have been submerged in floodwaters.
Residents are urged to report hazardous electrical situations and power outages through Meralco’s official Facebook page, its X account @meralco, text hotlines 0920-9716211 and 0917-5516211, or the Meralco Hotline at 16211.
For now, the utility’s restoration crews remain on the move across Habagat-hit areas, although floodwaters continue to dictate where and when power can safely be brought back.
