Dominguez joins Megaworld board as lead independent

Former Finance Secretary Carlos “Sonny” G. Dominguez has joined the board of property giant Megaworld Corp. as lead independent director, bringing more than four decades of experience spanning government, finance, and corporate leadership.

Dominguez served as finance secretary from 2016 to 2022, steering the Department of Finance through major economic and fiscal reforms. He previously headed the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in the late 1980s.

His private-sector career has taken him across banking, power, aviation, agriculture, mining, hospitality, real estate, and investments. He was chairman and president of Philippine Airlines and held senior leadership and board positions at Philippine Associated Smelting and Refining Corp., BPI Agricultural Development Bank, and RCBC Capital Corp., among other companies.

Megaworld Chairman Andrew L. Tan said Dominguez’s experience would strengthen the property developer’s board as it enters its next phase of growth.

“We are honored to welcome Secretary Sonny Dominguez to Megaworld’s Board of Directors,” Tan said. “Throughout his distinguished career, he has helped shape the country’s economic landscape through principled leadership in government, finance, and business.”

Dominguez’s appointment comes as Megaworld continues expanding its integrated townships across major economic and tourism destinations in the Philippines.

The company said his addition to the board also reinforces its focus on corporate governance, board diversity, and independent oversight as it pursues its long-term growth strategy.

For Megaworld, the appointment brings to the board someone who has spent much of his career moving between the policy table and the corporate boardroom. That combination could prove useful as the property giant navigates an economy where interest rates, investment flows, infrastructure, and tourism increasingly shape the prospects for real estate.

Dominguez holds an economics degree and a master’s degree in business management from Ateneo de Manila University and attended Stanford University’s Executive Management Program.
