Philippine manufacturing accelerated sharply in August, posting its strongest production growth in nearly a decade as stronger demand, recovering exports, and renewed hiring pointed to a broader industrial recovery.
The S&P Global Philippines Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index rose for a fourth consecutive month to 54.9 from 51.8 in July, its highest reading since December 2016. A reading above 50 indicates expansion.
The rebound was broad-based. Factory output grew at its fastest pace since December 2016, while new orders posted their strongest increase in six months, supported by product launches, repeat business, and a wider customer base.
Export orders also returned to growth after six months of contraction, giving the recovery a lift beyond domestic demand. Manufacturers responded by increasing purchases at the fastest pace in six months and resuming hiring.
Job creation was particularly notable, reaching its strongest level in 21 months.
“The Filipino manufacturing sector continued to build momentum in August,” said Maryam Baluch, economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence.
The improvement was also accompanied by easing cost pressures. Although manufacturers continued to face higher energy, raw material, and logistics costs, the pace of input-price inflation slowed sharply. Selling-price inflation likewise eased to a six-month low.
That combination of stronger orders and softer price pressures gives the recovery more substance than a rebound driven solely by inventory or temporary production gains.
Business confidence rose to a 21-month high, with manufacturers citing expansion plans, new product lines, and expectations of additional customer wins.
The August data therefore point to a manufacturing recovery broadening across output, orders, exports, employment, and business sentiment. The challenge is sustaining that momentum as manufacturers continue to navigate elevated operating costs and a still-uncertain economic backdrop.
