The Filipinas did not need more possession to make more noise.
The Philippines’ national women’s football team blanked Hong Kong, 2-0, on a cool Thursday night at Gifu Nagaragawa Stadium in Japan, moving closer to the Asian Games quarterfinals with a performance built on efficiency rather than territorial dominance.
Hong Kong actually had more of the ball, with 55 percent possession, and edged the Filipinas in corners, 6-5. But possession, as the Filipinas demonstrated, is only useful if it comes with receipts.
The Philippines had 16 attempts, putting eight on target. Hong Kong managed nine attempts, but only four tested veteran goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel, who repeatedly slammed the door shut.
The Filipinas opened the scoring just before the 12th minute. Skye Leach pounced on a loose ball after a Hong Kong defender headed away Dionesa “Inday” Tolentin’s effort, giving the Philippines an early lead.
Hong Kong kept pressing, but the Filipinas refused to crack.
Mallie Ramirez then supplied the insurance in the 63rd minute, finishing off an assist from Megan Murray. The 21-year-old midfielder used a clever heel kick to escape her marker before sending the ball into Ramirez’s path. The 22-year-old forward made sure there would be no late drama this time.
The goal was particularly welcome after the Filipinas settled for a 1-1 draw with Uzbekistan on Monday.
The victory also gave captain Hali Long an extra reason to smile. Her 108th international cap drew her level with former men’s national team star Phil Younghusband.
With four points, the Filipinas moved into second place in Group G. China also has four points but owns a commanding 6-2 goal advantage after two matches.
That makes the September 21 meeting with China particularly important.
The quarterfinal math is simple enough: the top two teams from each group, plus the two best third-placed teams, advance.
For now, the Filipinas have done their part.
And they did it without needing to hog the ball.
