Year-end travel: Smart ways to stretch your budget

With the -ber months fast approaching, many Filipinos are mapping out year-end trips, family reunions, or long-awaited vacations abroad.

But holiday travel often comes with a long list of costs—from advance flight and hotel bookings to meals, activities, and unplanned expenses along the way.

Setting a budget is key, but how you manage payments can also help you save. A simple rule to keep in mind: let rewards support your spending plan, not dictate it.

If you hold a credit card with travel perks, knowing exactly what it offers can add value to purchases you already intended to make.

Start by checking how your travel spending earns rewards. Different cards offer different structures—some accumulate miles on every purchase, while others give higher returns for specific categories like hotel stays, online bookings, or overseas transactions.

For example, the Metrobank Travel Signature Visa gives one mile for every ₱30 spent on any purchase category. Meanwhile, the Metrobank World Mastercard offers one mile for every ₱17 spent on eligible foreign currency transactions, hotel bookings, and online purchases.

It also pays to look beyond rewards and promotions; foreign transaction fees can add up quickly. The Metrobank Travel Signature Visa charges a low forex fee of 1.68 percent on eligible transactions, while the Metrobank World Mastercard charges 1.85 percent.

If you have either card, understanding where you gain more value helps you choose the right one for each planned expense.

The goal is never to spend more just to earn points, but to make your budgeted spending work harder for you.

Also, look into benefits that go beyond points and miles. Many cards offer useful perks you might not have considered. During the busy holiday travel season, airport lounge access can make long waits much more comfortable.

Both Metrobank cards give eligible users unlimited access to select local airport lounges, while World Mastercard holders also get two free visits to global lounges annually through Mastercard Travel Pass. Travel insurance is another major plus.

Those with the Travel Signature Visa who charge their plane tickets to the card receive complimentary travel insurance coverage of up to ₱25 million, subject to terms and conditions.

Before leaving, review all your card’s benefits and the requirements to claim them—you may find you already have access to lounge visits or insurance that would otherwise cost extra.

In the end, stretching your travel budget is not about finding new reasons to spend. Good financial habits apply even on vacation. It comes down to planning your costs carefully, sticking to your limits, and making full use of the benefits already available to you.

The most rewarding trip is not the one that racks up the most points—it is the one you can fully enjoy without returning home to unexpected debt.
