Manila Electric Company (Meralco), led by Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan, is ramping up investments in advanced technologies to boost network oversight while delivering safer, more reliable, and more efficient power service to its customers.
At Huawei Connect 2026 in Shanghai today, Meralco Senior Vice President and Networks Head Engr. Froilan J. Savet detailed how its Advanced Metering Infrastructure using High-Speed Power Line Carrier Communication (AMI-HPLC) extends full visibility down to the low-voltage distribution network.
Leveraging existing power lines for data transfer with smart meters, HPLC technology delivers real-time insights that support faster outage detection and restoration, better energy balancing, reduced system losses, and accurate monitoring of transformer loads and overall network health.
This enhanced visibility also lays the groundwork for Meralco’s upcoming Grid-Edge Operations and Control Center (GEOCC)—a centralized hub that will consolidate grid-edge data to speed up operational decision-making.
Together, AMI-HPLC and GEOCC will prepare Meralco’s network to support growing adoption of rooftop solar, electric vehicles, battery energy storage, and other emerging technologies—while further strengthening service quality and reliability across its franchise area.
This positions Meralco to proactively manage a more dynamic, distributed energy landscape, improve operational efficiency, and future-proof its infrastructure for evolving customer and market demands.
