Beach volleyball has a simple rule: get to 21, win by two, and try not to blink when the scoreboard starts looking like a suspense thriller.
The Alas Pilipinas duo of Khylem Harl Progella and Sofiah Shanine Pagara did exactly that, surviving a tense Japanese challenge to punch their ticket to the semifinals of the Asian Games beach volleyball competition.
The Alas pair needed 40 minutes—and plenty of nerve—to dispatch their Japanese opponents, 24-22, 22-20, at the Hekinan Ryokuchi Beach Court.
Neither set was willing to end politely.
With beach volleyball played to 21 points, a 20-all tie requires a team to win by two. Progella and Pagara twice found themselves in that territory, where every serve carries a little more weight and every error suddenly looks enormous.
They kept their composure when it mattered, closing out both sets without allowing the Japanese pair to force a decider.
The victory sends Progella and Pagara into Thursday’s semifinal against Thailand, with considerably more than bragging rights at stake. A win guarantees at least a silver medal and a place in the final; a loss sends them into the bronze-medal match.
Earlier, fellow Alas Pilipinas duo Cherry Ann Rondina and Bernadeth Pons also took Thailand to the wire in their quarterfinal encounter, but their run ended after a three-set battle, 17-21, 21-12, 13-15.
Rondina and Pons recovered impressively after dropping the opening set, leveling the match with a dominant second frame before Thailand edged them in the deciding third.
For Progella and Pagara, however, the equation is now delightfully simple: one more win for the final, and one more chance to make the sand sparkle a little brighter for the Philippines.
