Govt’t mobilizes ₱45-billion climate response to tame rising food inflation

The Department of Agriculture has launched a series of aggressive market interventions and supply-side measures to stabilize skyrocketing food prices following a sharp spike in September inflation. Driven by severe weather disruptions, escalating fuel expenses, and higher transport costs, national inflation matched its highest level in over three years, forcing government officials to take immediate policy action.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. announced that the government is setting aside ₱45 billion specifically for climate response initiatives, with ₱6.2 billion already disbursed. The funding aims to bolster local agricultural output, ensure adequate food reserves, and provide direct financial relief to farmers, fisherfolk, and agricultural truckers burdened by rising operational costs.

The intervention comes as economic data highlights food costs as the primary engine behind the nation’s inflationary pressures. According to official statistics, September inflation reached 7.2 percent, driven largely by a food inflation surge to 6.8 percent. Key staples saw severe price increases, with rice inflation hitting 20.3 percent and vegetable prices jumping by double digits after seasonal storms disrupted harvests and distribution routes.

Beyond immediate local relief, the policy framework signals a willingness to utilize strategic food imports whenever domestic supplies fall short. By maintaining a balance between farm-gate price support and import adjustments, the government intends to prevent retail price gouging while ensuring a continuous flow of basic commodities from agricultural hubs to consumer markets.

The long-term implications of these policies carry heightened urgency as meteorologists forecast a prolonged Super El Niño pattern stretching into 2027. With severe dry conditions expected to hit crops, livestock, and fisheries hardest over the coming months, the administration’s proactive strategy reflects a broader push to insulate the economy from climate-driven supply shocks and secure national food security.
