Tondo streets get brighter via Public-Private Partnership

Major streets in Tondo are now better illuminated following a streetlighting initiative by the Manuel V. Pangilinan-led One Meralco Foundation (OMF) in partnership with the Manila city government, a move aimed at improving nighttime visibility and supporting public safety.

The project covers the stretch from Road 10 to Sta. Maria in Moriones, benefiting residents of 12 barangays and motorists who regularly traverse the area.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, Vice Mayor Chi Atienza and OMF President Jeffrey Tarayao led the lighting ceremony on October 15, marking the completion of a collaboration that combines private-sector resources with local government efforts to address community needs.

OMF provided 24 steel lamp posts, while Manila Electric Company (Meralco) handled their installation, metering and energization.

The initiative highlights the role of public-private partnerships in improving urban infrastructure, particularly in densely populated communities where adequate street lighting can enhance visibility for pedestrians and motorists. While lighting alone cannot eliminate road hazards or crime, better-illuminated streets can contribute to a safer environment for residents.

OMF said the project reflects its commitment to community empowerment and sustainable development through partnerships with local stakeholders.

The foundation, Meralco’s non-stock, nonprofit social development arm, focuses on community electrification and energy education, environmental sustainability, grassroots partnerships, youth development and disaster response. It is accredited by the Philippine Council for NGO Certification and registered with the Department of Social Welfare and Development as a social welfare and development agency.
