Power distribution companies are playing a central role in the country’s transition to electric mobility, providing the critical energy grid and charging infrastructure required to make electric vehicles a practical reality for everyday drivers and businesses. At the recent 14th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) and its electric mobility subsidiary Movem Electric, Inc. demonstrated how a modern and resilient power network serves as the backbone for sustainable transportation across the country.
The national shift toward electric vehicles relies directly on the capability of power companies to supply steady, reliable energy and build out widespread charging networks. Without a modernized power grid capable of handling increased electricity demands, electric vehicle adoption cannot succeed on a large scale. Power utilities act as essential enablers by upgrading grid infrastructure, powering public and private charging points, and assisting homes and commercial establishments with the technical requirements needed to install charging equipment safely.
During the summit, Meralco Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ronnie L. Aperocho emphasized that continuous investment in network infrastructure and grid modernization is essential to support the growing demand from electric vehicles. Meralco currently powers more than 2,000 electric vehicle charging points across its franchise area while actively working to electrify 25 percent of its own corporate fleet by 2030. Through its subsidiary MOVEM, the company also provides comprehensive services ranging from vehicle supply, leasing, and fleet operations to dedicated charging platforms for commercial and corporate clients.
By strengthening the energy grid and offering integrated end-to-end mobility solutions, power utilities ensure that the transition to cleaner transportation is both dependable and accessible. As the country moves toward a greener future, the active involvement of power distributors remains fundamental to building a reliable, connected ecosystem that supports electric vehicles on Philippine roads.
