PRC cites Meralco personnel, practices in full compliance of law

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has earned the distinction as the only distribution utility in the country cited by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) as fully compliant with the law on electrical engineering.

With the recognition, Meralco’s 7.6 million customers are assured that the power distributor’s facilities and buildings are fully maintained by an adequate number of highly qualified professional and registered electrical engineers, and registered master electricians for safe operations.

The PRC gave Meralco a Certificate of Compliance to Republic Act No. 7920 or the New Electrical Engineering Law, thus far the only distribution utility to achieve the milestone.

At the awarding ceremony, Francis V. Mapile, PRC Chairman for Professional Regulatory Board of Electrical Engineering, lauded Meralco for its full cooperation in implementing the law.

“Meralco’s commitment to safety as an integral part of its operations is highlighted with its full compliance to the Electrical Engineering Law. We hope that this serves as an inspiration to other distribution utilities to follow suit.”

RA 7920 regulates the practice, licensing, and registration of licensed electrical practitioners in the country.

Meralco in 2019 became the first distribution utility in the country to conform with the law and remains as the sole fully compliant energy distributor. Meralco has committed to support the PRC’s compliance advocacy and help promote and influence compliance of its other stakeholders, namely their subsidiaries, service contractors, suppliers and customers, in collaboration with the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines, Inc. (IIEE).

Meralco’s full compliance also earned the utility a Plaque of Appreciation from Lyndon Bague, the National President of the IIEE—the only professional organization of electrical practitioners accredited by the PRC.

Antonio M. Abuel Jr., Vice President and Head of Meralco Facilities, Safety, and Security Management, said the recognition empowers the distribution utility to continue delivering on its promise of reliable and efficient electric service.

As a major player in the Philippine energy industry, Meralco is embracing sustainability and safety at the core of its operations with focus on four strategic pillars: Power, Planet, People, and Prosperity to continuously deliver on its promise of stable, reliable, and sufficient power supply to its customers.
