The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) on Thursday reduced the number of potential sites for a planned venture into micro-modular reactor (MMR) nuclear energy technology from three to only two.
Ronnie Aperocho, Meralco chief operating officer, told reporters the Isla del Provisor in Manila as host to the technology is no longer considered viable.
The potential host to the planned facility now only includes Talim Island in Rizal province and San Rafael, Bulacan.
Aperocho said the US government is expected to comment on the feasibility of building the MMR on the two remaining sites, with Meralco having already submitted the results of their own pre-feasibility study to the US Embassy in Manila and for a US delegation expected in a few weeks.
In November last year, Meralco and the American firm Ultra Safe Nuclear Corp. agreed to a joint pre-feasibility study exploring the MMR technology as sustainable energy option for the Philippines.
