ERC strengthens policy development with new partnerships

In a strategic move to enhance policy-making in the power sector, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) announced partnerships with the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines (IIEE) and the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP).

On Tuesday night, the ERC signed a memorandum of agreement with the IIEE that addresses emerging challenges in the energy industry. As part of the pact, the IIEE will assist the ERC in reviewing and revising the country’s Grid Code and the Distribution Code. ERC chairman Monalisa Dimalanta emphasized the importance of this collaboration in strengthening the country’s regulatory framework while fostering capacity-building and knowledge-sharing among engineering professionals.

“This partnership with IIEE will play a crucial role in improving our regulatory processes and ensuring that the power sector evolves in line with emerging technological and operational developments,” Dimalanta said.

In addition, the ERC is also working closely with the ECCP in exploring ways of advancing shared goals in the renewable energy (RE) sector. A recent meeting between ERC officials and ECCP representatives, including executive director Florian Gottein and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners partner Robert Helms, focused on increasing the share of RE in the country’s energy mix.

As of the end of 2023, renewable energy sources—hydro, geothermal, wind, biomass, and solar—account for nearly 30 percent (8,416 megawatts) of the country’s installed on-grid capacity, according to the Department of Energy. The ERC’s ongoing collaboration with the ECCP seeks to drive sustainable and secure energy solutions that support the country’s energy transition.

The ERC plays a pivotal role in regulating the power sector, with a focus on reviewing electricity pricing applications and ensuring a balanced and fair energy market. Through these partnerships, the Commission aims to strengthen its capacity to meet the evolving needs of the energy sector while advancing sustainability goals.
