DICT, Google, and Coursera partners in ICT skills training

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), in collaboration with Google Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. and Coursera, has launched a groundbreaking initiative to equip Filipinos with high-demand skills in Information and Communications Technology (ICT), as part of a national push to strengthen the country’s cybersecurity and digital workforce.

The Google Career Certificate Program (GCCP) offers specialized training in key areas such as cybersecurity, data analytics, IT support, and project management. The program aims to address the increasing demand for skilled ICT professionals both locally and abroad.

Additionally, the program introduces Google AI Essentials, a course focused on helping individuals harness the power of generative Artificial Intelligence tools to boost productivity—a timely addition as AI becomes an integral part of the global workforce.

DICT Assistant Secretary for Consumer Protection, Wilroy V. Ticzon, emphasized that this initiative aligns with the Philippines’ cybersecurity goals, contributing to the nation’s broader strategy to enhance its digital workforce. The initiative is particularly focused on empowering unemployed individuals, university students, disadvantaged groups, MSME employees, and government workers with vital digital skills.

“This initiative is a key step toward realizing the administration’s vision of a cyber-secured Philippines,” Ticzon said. “By building a sustainable talent pipeline, we are positioning the Philippines as a global leader in cybersecurity.”

This partnership underscores the country’s commitment to improving its cybersecurity standing. In 2024, the Philippines achieved a significant milestone, climbing to 53rd place in the United Nations Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI), up from 61st in 2020. With an impressive score of 93.49, the Philippines is now just 1.51 points away from reaching the coveted Tier 1 category in the GCI, which recognizes the world’s top cybersecurity nations.

The GCCP launch comes at a pivotal time as the Philippines strives to maintain momentum in digital and cybersecurity advancements, with the goal of producing future-proof professionals equipped for the challenges of the digital age.
