PPA prepares for surge in passenger traffic as holiday season winds down

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) on Friday projected a significant spike in passenger traffic this weekend as thousands of travelers return from extended Christmas and New Year holidays.

The PPA projects over 674,000 passengers will pass through the country’s ports from 3 to 5 January 2025—a marked increase from the 4.36 million passengers recorded during the same period last year. The surge comes on the heels of a successful holiday season that saw over 3.6 million passengers using PPA-managed ports between 15 December 2024, and 2 January 2025.

PPA general manager Jay Santiago assured the public that port facilities are fully prepared to handle the influx of returning travelers. “We continue to uphold strict public safety protocols and security measures to ensure a smooth and safe travel experience. We also encourage passengers to book their tickets early to avoid long queues at ticket booths,” he said.

Security at all PPA ports nationwide remains on high alert, with approximately 3,000 security personnel and force multipliers stationed across various terminals. The ports are also equipped with 24/7 CCTV surveillance, roving K-9 units, and Malasakit helpdesks offering assistance to passengers in need.

Despite heightened security, the PPA reports that prohibited items such as knives, lighters, and matches have still been confiscated from passengers. One notable incident occurred at Dumangas Port on December 31, 2024, when fireworks were discovered in a traveler’s bag. The passenger, heading to Bacolod, attempted to bring the illegal items into the port. According to PPA regulations, fireworks are strictly prohibited in port areas.

The PPA also highlighted that several Port Management Offices (PMOs), including those in Batangas, Bohol, Davao, Negros Oriental/Siquijor, and Bicol, have experienced the highest passenger traffic in recent days.

With these preparations in place, the PPA is hopeful that the return of holiday travelers will be as smooth and safe as possible.
