Nora Aunor, 71, takes her final bow

Nora Aunor, the iconic voice that rose from the countryside to reign as the Philippines’ one and only “Superstar,” took her final bow on Wednesday night. She was 71.

Her children, Ian and Matet, confirmed her passing in heartfelt social media tributes, expressing profound love for their mother and grief over her loss.

Born Nora Cabaltera Villamayor in May 1953 in Iriga City, the diminutive, brown-skinned girl from Camarines Sur defied beauty norms and industry expectations. Armed with a soul-stirring voice, she captivated the nation in the 1960s and launched a storied career that would make her a towering figure in Philippine entertainment.

Her golden voice led to a string of acting roles that showcased her emotional depth and fierce talent. Over the decades, she delivered unforgettable performances in some of local cinema’s most acclaimed films—Banaue (1975), Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos and Minsa’y Isang Gamu-Gamo (both in 1976), the internationally revered Himala
(1982), and Bulaklak sa City Jail (1984), among many others.

Aunor’s filmography spanned more than 170 titles, and her legacy was formally enshrined in 2022 when she was named a National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts.

She was more than a star; she was a symbol of resilience, artistry, and the enduring power of the Filipino spirit.
