First Gen Corp. has renewed its renewable energy (RE) supply agreement with Cebu-based Chioson Group of Companies and FLB Prime Holdings Inc., a move that underscores the growing corporate shift toward sustainability in the manufacturing and real estate sectors.
Under the renewed deal signed on 30 April, First Gen will continue to supply 2.1 megawatts (MW) of electricity from its geothermal power plants in Kananga and Ormoc City, Leyte. The power will be used to run Chioson’s steel manufacturing operations in Mandaue City and FLB Prime’s corporate offices in Cebu City.
The geothermal facilities are operated by First Gen’s subsidiary, Energy Development Corp. (EDC), a key player in the country’s renewable energy sector.
Although financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, the renewed contract highlights First Gen’s growing role in enabling industrial clients to meet sustainability targets while managing energy costs. The Chioson Group, a major steel manufacturer, produces a wide range of products including c-purlins, corrugated sheets, rigid steel conduit pipes, rebars, and nails.
“This partnership has allowed us to avoid at least 5 million tons of CO₂ emissions over the past five years,” said Bernard Chioson, chief operating officer of Chioson Development Corp. “It affirms our commitment to sustainable manufacturing, and we look forward to deepening this relationship.”
First Gen vice president for sales and marketing Arlene Sy emphasized the strategic importance of expanding clean energy partnerships with industrial and commercial clients. “Our geothermal drilling program is progressing, and we’re confident we can serve more companies with not only clean energy but also smart energy solutions that optimize power consumption and cost,” Sy said.
First Gen operates 1,651 MW of renewable capacity across 28 plants, with an additional 2,017 MW from natural gas facilities. The company is targeting 13,000 MW of total capacity by 2030, backed by a planned investment of up to $20 billion.
The deal signals continued momentum for green energy adoption among energy-intensive industries in the Visayas region and supports the Philippine government’s broader push toward energy transition.
