San Miguel Foods Inc. (SMFI) has reported marked improvements in child nutrition under its expanded mother-and-child health initiative, “Happy si Mommy, Malusog si Baby,” now supporting over 1,000 beneficiaries in 24 barangays across the Philippines. According to program data, 89 percent of enrolled children have achieved normal height and weight, while underweight cases dropped to just 2 percent, and only 9 percent remain classified as malnourished.
The program targets the first 1,000 days of life — from pregnancy to age two — a critical window for human development. Initially piloted in 2022, it now covers over 400 families in Luzon, 300 in the Visayas, and 250 in Mindanao. Delivered in partnership with San Miguel Foundation, local governments, and private organizations, it provides prenatal care, health education, and fortified Mingo Meals — developed by DOST-FNRI and produced by the Negrense Volunteers for Change Foundation.
San Miguel Corp. chairman and CEO Ramon S. Ang emphasized the importance of sustained, community-based interventions, stating, “Good nutrition starts before birth, and we want to make sure mothers and children in underprivileged communities receive sustained support — not just one-time assistance.”
Nutrition advocates and policymakers view the program as a strong model for integrated, localized public-private interventions focused on early childhood health. The initiative also trains barangay health workers, with 102 receiving instruction from DOST-FNRI on essential maternal and child care practices.
With outcomes demonstrating scalable impact, “Happy si Mommy, Malusog si Baby” underscores how targeted nutrition policies during the first 1,000 days can significantly reduce malnutrition rates and improve lifelong health outcomes — aligning with San Miguel’s broader goal to uplift 15 million Filipinos by 2030.
