SMC expands tree-planting drive across 48 Philippine sites

San Miguel Corp. (SMC) has ramped up its reforestation efforts through its employee volunteer initiative, planting or donating a total of 98,296 tree seedlings across the Philippines. The program, conducted under SMC’s Team Malasakit platform, mobilized 2,457 employees in 2024 in 48 locations across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The initiative supports the company’s environmental goals of mitigating flood risks, improving air and water quality, and reviving critical forest ecosystems.

In celebration of Team Malasakit’s 10th year and Philippine Arbor Day, 225 SMC employees recently planted native species like narra, lawaan, and banaba at Mount Purro Nature Reserve (MPNR) in Antipolo City. The site, located within the Sierra Madre range—a vital natural barrier against floods in Metro Manila and Rizal—has now seen 4,600 trees planted by SMC, with an 80 percent survival rate recorded in the previous year.

SMC president and CEO Ramon S. Ang emphasized the long-term impact of sustained tree-planting: “Tree planting, when done consistently and at scale, makes a big difference.”

For the remainder of 2025, SMC has scheduled 21 volunteer-led planting events, involving 1,351 employees, aiming to plant at least 7,675 seedlings and contribute over 4,000 volunteer hours.

These grassroots efforts complement broader corporate reforestation projects such as San Miguel Global Power’s Project 747, which has planted over 6.5 million trees and mangroves nationwide. The program boasts high survival rates—91 percent for upland trees and 89 percent for mangroves—and is on pace to surpass its goal of 7 million trees in 7 years.

Additionally, San Miguel Properties Inc. has pledged 80,000 seedlings to bolster reforestation in Bataan.

“We are not just planting trees—we are planting love for the environment,” said MPNR founder Alberto “Toto” Malvar, highlighting the program’s long-term stewardship model.
