GCash, Huawei debut Watch Pay for contactless payments

Mobile wallet and payments platform GCash has teamed up with Huawei to launch Watch Pay, the country’s first wearable-based payment solution, in a development that underscores both firms’ commitment to digital innovation and convenience in mobile commerce.

The partnership enables GCash users to make secure, contactless payments using QR codes directly generated from compatible Huawei smartwatches, removing the need to pull out a phone or wallet. Transactions are completed seamlessly at merchants with QR-enabled point-of-sale systems.

“This innovation responds to the fast-paced, mobile-centric lifestyle of Filipinos,” said Ren-Ren Reyes, president and CEO of G-Xchange, Inc., operator of GCash. “GCash Watch Pay empowers users with secure, hands-free transactions — whether commuting, running errands, or exercising.”

The feature enhances the commercial utility of Huawei wearables, now integrated with GCash’s robust payment system, and targets over 7 million Huawei smartwatch users in the Philippines.

Highlighting the strategic partnership, GCash Payment Innovations head Dani Gil Librojo recently joined the Huawei Developer Conference in Dongguan, China, as the companies further deepened their fintech collaboration.

This development strengthens GCash’s claim as a leader in mobile payments and showcases Huawei’s expanding role in the digital payments ecosystem.
