BOC seizes over ₱600M worth of illicit cigarettes in Bulacan raid

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) on Wednesday reported the seizure of approximately ₱605.29 million worth of smuggled cigarettes bearing markings from China and Vietnam during a warehouse raid in Plaridel, Bulacan.

The operation, backed by a letter of authority and prompted by intelligence from the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Services-Manila International Container Port, uncovered 8,647 master cases of imported cigarettes lacking Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) tax stamps and mandated graphic health warnings.

The raid was carried out by the BOC’s Intelligence and Enforcement Groups, in coordination with the Philippine Coast Guard and local barangay officials.

Three individuals were apprehended and are currently undergoing inquest proceedings before the Department of Justice. A warrant of seizure and detention will be issued, and criminal complaints will be filed against the registered owner and proprietor of the warehouse.

Customs Commissioner Ariel F. Nepomuceno emphasized the agency’s commitment to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to combat illicit cigarette trade and safeguard legitimate commerce.

The BOC reaffirmed its vow to hold smugglers accountable through intensified enforcement efforts.
