Globe Telecom has successfully completed new pilot tests of its satellite-powered mobile service, marking another step toward providing reliable connectivity to all Filipinos, even in remote areas.
Through partnerships with low earth orbit (LEO) satellite providers, Globe is testing Direct-to-Cellular or Satellite-to-Phone (Sat2Phone) technology. This innovation allows ordinary mobile phones to connect directly to satellites—no special devices needed.
The company’s latest trial, conducted with Lynk Global, successfully demonstrated voice calls via satellite, showing strong potential for wider rollout soon. The test builds on Globe’s earlier achievements, including the Philippines’ first satellite-based SMS and voice service trials.
“By exploring satellite-to-phone connectivity, we’re making sure no Filipino is left behind,” said Gerhard Tan, Globe’s senior director for technology strategy and innovation. “This technology helps bring universal connectivity within reach.”
Globe believes non-terrestrial Network (NTN) technology will also strengthen disaster response and emergency communications, ensuring quick and dependable links when they matter most. Guided by its Alagang Globe advocacy, the company continues to invest in innovations that promote an inclusive and digitally empowered Philippines.
