ERC clears NGCP’s P12.96B Camarines Sur substation

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has approved the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines’ (NGCP) 500-kilovolt substation project in Milaor, Camarines Sur, which will serve as a connection point for offshore wind power projects. The project costs P12.96 billion.

The ERC ordered NGCP to commission one of two 1,000-MVA transformers by 2027 and complete the project by August 2030. NGCP was also directed to pay P97.2 million in permit fees. The ERC said the project will help ensure reliable and efficient power supply.

Separately, NGCP said it has taken over the Caticlan-Unidos 69 kV transmission line in Aklan following an ERC order, allowing it to immediately address recurring outages caused mainly by salt spray corrosion and water splashes.

NGCP has built an adjusted bypass line away from the shoreline, which is set to be energized within the month, and plans full reconductoring of the line by March 2026.

The takeover followed damage to the line in September and the Aklan Electric Cooperative’s admission that it could not fund the repairs. The line was reclassified as a transmission facility in November 2024.

NGCP is also fast-tracking the Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay 138 kV transmission line, targeted for completion by August 2026, to further improve power reliability in the area.
