DOTr steps up transport operations as passenger numbers rise

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is speeding up operational improvements to handle the growing number of commuters at major transport hubs, particularly at the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX), following heavy passenger traffic during the recent holiday season.

In December 2025, PITX served nearly 5.7 million passengers, with about 3.4 million recorded during the Christmas and New Year period alone. Total foot traffic at the terminal reached more than 60.2 million in 2025, up by over 9.1 million commuters compared to 2024.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the DOTr is committed to ensuring that transport terminals can safely and efficiently manage the increasing passenger demand. He added that the agency and PITX are fully prepared, with enough buses in operation, smoother terminal management, and strengthened security measures to improve passenger travel.

To support rising commuter volumes in Metro Manila, the DOTr noted that PITX is now connected to the LRT-1, while construction of a new EDSA Busway Station at PITX is underway. These developments aim to improve intermodal connections, safety, and convenience for commuters.

Passenger numbers on the EDSA Busway also continued to grow, serving more than 66.6 million passengers in 2025, up from 63 million in 2024. December 2025 recorded the highest monthly ridership at over 6.5 million passengers, while the highest single-day count reached more than 321,000 in April 2025.

Since its launch in June 2020, the EDSA Busway Project has served over 341 million passengers. The project, a flagship program of the DOTr supported by the Department of Public Works and Highways and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, aims to improve the efficiency, safety, and accessibility of mass transport along EDSA, Metro Manila’s main thoroughfare.
