Alternergy secures GEA awards, fast-tracks expansion

Renewable power pioneer Alternergy Holdings Corp. has cleared a major regulatory hurdle after receiving all five Certificates of Award from the Department of Energy for the projects it won under the Green Energy Auction 4 program.

The certificates were issued in early January after Alternergy, through its solar and wind units, completed and submitted all post-auction requirements, including System Impact Studies and performance bonds, ahead of the original December 5, 2025 deadline. The DOE later extended the submission window to end-January, giving developers additional leeway.

“This demonstrates the readiness of all our projects for full-scale development and Alternergy’s commitment to bringing them to fruition,” said Alternergy President Gerry P. Magbanua, calling the awards a key milestone for the company’s GEA 4 portfolio.

The five projects represent a combined 500 megawatts of new capacity, pushing Alternergy closer to its target of building one gigawatt of renewable energy capacity by 2030. Among these are the Liberty Floating Solar Phase A and B projects in Tarlac, expected to be among the country’s earliest large-scale floating solar installations.

Magbanua said the projects will show how renewable energy can coexist with aquaculture, improving land use while supporting food security and local livelihoods.

Alternergy is also advancing its Kalandagan solar and battery energy storage system project in Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat, marking its first major battery-integrated development in Mindanao following the Palau solar-plus-BESS project that entered commercial operations in 2024.

Two new wind projects—the Tayabas North Wind Project in Quezon and the Alegria Wind Project in Cebu—will add more than 200 megawatts to its pipeline, complementing the near-completion of the Tanay and Alabat wind projects this year.

Alternergy’s timely compliance and diversified project mix position it well as the Philippines accelerates its renewable energy buildout under auction-based procurement, where execution speed is increasingly becoming a competitive edge.
