The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has pledged to continue delivering reliable electricity and supporting the government’s national energy agenda, in line with commitments outlined by Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in his 2025 State of the Nation Address.
At an event held at Meralco’s headquarters in Pasig City, President Marcos joined Meralco chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan, officials from the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), and other government leaders to affirm shared goals of expanding renewable energy, protecting low-income consumers, and achieving universal access to electricity.
Meralco said it will continue working closely with government agencies to turn national energy policies into programs that directly benefit consumers.
Pangilinan highlighted efforts to strengthen the implementation of the Lifeline Rate Subsidy Program to ensure poor households receive electricity bill discounts. The company is also streamlining the application process for Net Metering to encourage more Filipinos to install rooftop solar systems. The administration aims to energize at least one million homes through rooftop solar by 2028.
To support total electrification, Meralco recently launched a hybrid solar project that will provide round-the-clock power to more than 1,000 residents of Cagbalete Island in Mauban, Quezon.
Meralco’s power generation arm is also preparing to energize the MTerra Solar project, a 3,500-megawatt solar farm with battery storage, described as the country’s largest integrated solar facility. An initial 85 megawatts of power are expected to be dispatched this month, less than 15 months after the project’s inauguration in November 2024.
Beyond renewables, Meralco secured a US$2.8 million technical assistance grant from the United States Trade and Development Agency to study the potential deployment of nuclear power plants in the Philippines, in line with the government’s plan to explore safe and responsible nuclear energy adoption.
Pangilinan said these milestones were achieved through strong cooperation among the government, regulators, utilities, and communities.
President Marcos, in turn, commended Meralco for its electrification projects and renewable energy investments, saying these efforts help ensure no Filipino household is left without power while strengthening long-term energy security and reducing carbon emissions.
Meralco said it remains committed to supporting nation-building efforts by delivering stable electricity and advancing long-term energy solutions for sustainable and inclusive growth.
