DOE opens P624.7M bid for geothermal survey

The Department of Energy (DOE) has opened bidding for a service provider to conduct gradiometry and seismic surveys to identify potential geothermal energy resources in the country.

The project has an approved budget of P624.72 million. A pre-bid conference is set for March 26, while bid submissions and opening will take place on April 15.

Energy Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella earlier said the surveys will help locate and map possible geothermal resource areas in Central Philippines, including the Visayas and parts of Mindanao, which may later be offered to investors.

The DOE said the project will improve data on geothermal potential and support the country’s long-term energy security. The survey will be funded by the government, while private companies are expected to handle exploration.

As of October 2025, the Philippines had 31,916 MW of installed power capacity, with 2,026 MW (6.3 percent)coming from geothermal plants. The country is the third-largest geothermal energy producer globally, after the United States and Indonesia.
