Renewable energy developer SN Aboitiz Power (SNAP) expects to complete 56 megawatts (MW) of new battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity in 2026, increasing its total capacity to 729 MW from the current 673 MW.
SNAP president and CEO Joseph Yu said the additional capacity will come from two projects: the 16-MW Magat BESS 2 in Isabela and the 40-MW Binga BESS 1 in Benguet.
Yu said the Magat battery project will expand from 24 MW to 40 MW, while the 40-MW Binga battery facility is expected to begin operations around the middle of 2026.
The company did not disclose the investment cost of the projects but confirmed it has issued a notice to proceed for another 80-MW BESS project, which is targeted for completion next year.
SNAP also said it continues to study the proposed Alimit hydropower project in Ifugao. Yu noted the project is still progressing but may require adjustments due to the planned entry of several pumped-storage hydro projects under the government’s Green Energy Auction Program and improvements in transmission infrastructure in the region.
The Alimit project was originally planned in two phases: a 120-MW Alimit plant and a 20-MW Olilicon plant costing about $450 million to $550 million, followed by a 250-MW pumped-storage facility.
SNAP operates several hydropower plants, including the 112.5-MW Ambuklao and 140-MW Binga plants in Benguet, the 388-MW Magat plant in Isabela and Ifugao, and the 8.5-MW Maris hydro project in Isabela.
The company is a joint venture between Aboitiz Power and Norwegian renewable energy firm Scatec ASA.
