SMHCC bets big on Cebu MICE hub

SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation (SMHCC) is ramping up efforts to position the Philippines as a stronger player in the global meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) market, anchored on the upcoming launch of SMX Convention Center Seaside Cebu.

Scheduled to open later this year, the facility is expected to be the country’s largest convention center, aimed at drawing international event organizers and competing with established venues across Southeast Asia.

SM Hotels senior vice president for Operations Walid Wafik said the project highlights the group’s push to elevate the Philippines’ standing in business tourism.

“With its contemporary architecture, expansive capabilities, and prime location, it offers international organizers a compelling alternative to established convention destinations across Southeast Asia, while allowing events to be paired with leisure experiences,” Wafik said, citing Cebu’s cultural and tourism appeal.

The convention center rises within Cebu’s rapidly developing South Road Properties (SRP), forming part of an integrated events and hospitality ecosystem. It connects directly to SM Seaside City Cebu and sits near hotel developments under the Radisson and Park Inn by Radisson brands, as well as the SM Arena Seaside Cebu.

Covering more than 40,000 square meters, the venue will house four column-free exhibition halls, multiple meeting rooms, and advanced technical infrastructure tailored for large-scale international gatherings.
It will also feature extensive support facilities, including parking, catering services, and safety systems.

Designed for accessibility, the center incorporates inclusive features aimed at delivering a seamless, globally competitive event experience.
