Lipa hospital performs rare cochlear implant on 5-year-old

The Mary Mediatrix Medical Center successfully performed a delicate cochlear implant surgery on a five-year-old child with profound hearing loss in March, marking only the third such procedure in Batangas and the wider Southern Luzon region.

The operation, led by ENT head and neck surgery and specialist Dr. Joy Celyn Ignacio-Fajardo, took place weeks after March 3, observed as World Hearing Day, when the Department of Health highlights ear care awareness.

Doctors said cochlear implant surgery is complex, especially for children, requiring precise placement of a device in the inner ear. The procedure helps children with severe hearing loss develop listening and speaking skills important for learning and social interaction.

Specialists stressed that early intervention is critical, as young children have a limited period when their brains are most able to develop language skills. Early diagnosis through newborn screening and hearing tests can significantly improve outcomes.

Before surgery, the child underwent extensive tests and consultations with a team of specialists, including audiologists and speech therapists.

The hospital said the procedure reflects its growing ability to provide advanced care locally, reducing the need for patients to travel to Metro Manila.

The cost of a cochlear implant can reach about ₱800,000, making it unaffordable for many families. The medical team helped the patient’s family secure financial aid from charitable organizations. Only one implant was provided due to limited funds, though two are typically recommended.

Dr. Ignacio-Fajardo also waived her professional fee as part of her advocacy for hearing health.

Hospital officials said they will continue expanding specialized services to improve access to care in Southern Luzon.
