Baguio boosts smart city push with AI partnership

Baguio City is stepping up its digital transformation efforts after partnering with PLDT and Smart to launch “AI-in-a-Box,” a program designed to help local governments use artificial intelligence to improve public services.

The initiative provides the city government with AI tools, internet connectivity, devices, and training support from PLDT, Smart, Microsoft, and Lenovo Philippines. The package includes a laptop, smartphone, connectivity device, and premium AI access to help city workers develop practical AI-based solutions.

PLDT and Smart also started an AI mentorship program for Baguio’s local government teams to support the city’s long-term smart city plans, including better public services, sustainability programs, and wider access to opportunities for residents.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong said the partnership strengthens Baguio’s goal of becoming a smart and inclusive city under its “Baguio 2047” vision.

Microsoft introduced its AI assistant, Copilot, to help government offices speed up tasks and improve citizen services, while Lenovo highlighted the importance of giving local governments access to modern technology.

The project is part of PLDT and Smart’s broader digital inclusion campaign, which also supports other local governments like Cebu City and Lanao del Sur in adopting AI-driven solutions. The initiative also supports the United Nations goal of promoting innovation and digital infrastructure.
