Aftershocks stall Alliance Select’s tuna plant restart

Alliance Select Foods International Inc. has postponed the planned reopening of its General Santos City tuna processing facility after persistent aftershocks forced the company to suspend ongoing recovery and rehabilitation activities.

In a disclosure on Monday, the listed tuna processor said production, originally targeted to resume on June 16, will remain on hold until a thorough assessment of the facility is completed.

The latest setback extends the operational disruption caused by the powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck General Santos City and nearby areas on June 8, prompting the company to halt operations and activate emergency response procedures.

“Recovery and rehabilitation activities have been suspended due to continuing aftershocks,” Alliance Select said, adding that the restart of production will be delayed until safety evaluations are finalized.

The company emphasized that employee and contractor safety remains its top priority as engineers and technical teams continue to inspect the facility for possible structural and operational risks.

Initial assessments conducted after the earthquake showed damage to warehouse facilities and portions of stored inventory. A broader review of buildings, equipment, inventories, and other assets remains ongoing as management works to determine the full extent of the impact.

Alliance Select noted that the facility and related assets are covered by insurance, which could help cushion the financial impact of repairs and operational interruptions.

The prolonged shutdown highlights the vulnerability of food-processing operations to natural disasters, particularly in export-oriented industries where production delays can disrupt supply chains and shipment schedules. General Santos City is a major hub for the Philippines’ tuna industry, making any extended interruption closely watched by buyers and industry stakeholders.

While the company has yet to provide a revised timetable for resuming operations, management said it will continue to monitor conditions and release updates as material information becomes available.
