SMBC Aviation Capital has placed a firm order for 100 additional aircraft from the Airbus A320neo Family, consisting of 65 A321neo and 35 A320neo units. The agreement was officially confirmed on 20 July 2026 during the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom.
Peter Barrett, chief executive officer of SMBC Aviation Capital, stated that this major order will ensure a steady supply of the latest technology planes for their airline customers through the mid-2030s. He noted that the deal builds on a 25-year partnership with Airbus and shows strong confidence in long-term demand for the A320neo line, while also reinforcing the company’s position as a leading global aviation finance provider.
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, executive vice president for commercial aircraft sales at Airbus, welcomed the expanded cooperation, describing the A320neo Family as the most widely leased and traded aircraft in the world, serving as a trusted benchmark for airlines, leasing firms and investors. He added that the investment reflects growing global preference for these modern, efficient planes as carriers upgrade and expand their fleets.
SMBC Aviation Capital is already among the biggest buyers of the A320 Family, and together with its parent firm Sumitomo Corporation, the group has committed to more than 900 aircraft directly from Airbus across all models. The A320neo Family remains the world’s best-selling single-aisle aircraft series, with over 20,200 orders recorded globally. These newer models deliver at least 20 percent lower fuel use and carbon emissions compared to older single-aisle planes, while offering one of the widest cabins in their class for greater passenger comfort. The larger A321neo variant also stands out for its extended range and advanced performance.
