Kia Philippines is expanding its product lineup with more sport utility vehicles while maintaining a balanced mix of internal combustion engine, hybrid and electric vehicles, reflecting a strategy that aligns with the realities of the Philippine market rather than a rapid transition to full electrification.
The approach comes as demand for electrified vehicles continues to grow, although conventional gasoline-powered models still dominate local vehicle sales.
“Our ambition is really to grow and provide the best relevant products for Filipino drivers,” Kia Philippines Managing Director Jay Lopez said during the launch of the fifth-generation Kia Sportage Turbo Hybrid.
“We wanted to grow in that direction by offering new, world-class models full of accolades so Filipinos can truly enjoy them,” he added.
Following the launch of the Sportage, Kia is preparing to introduce the all-electric EV3 and the PV5 in the coming months, with more new models arriving next year as part of the product roadmap first unveiled during last year’s Philippine International Motor Show.
Lopez said the company is deliberately maintaining a diverse portfolio instead of rapidly shifting to fully electric vehicles, recognizing that consumer preferences remain varied.
“I think it’s more balanced,” he said. “There’s still a huge community driving ICE vehicles, and we want to continue catering to that market. It really depends on market demand.”
Future launches are expected to remain centered on SUVs, the segment that continues to drive much of the industry’s growth.
“I think SUVs are what Filipinos are looking for,” Lopez said. “It’s a vehicle you can use for work or business and at the same time enjoy weekend adventures.”
Kia’s strategy reflects a broader trend in the domestic automotive industry, where hybrids are increasingly viewed as a practical transition technology while charging infrastructure and consumer adoption of fully electric vehicles continue to develop. By maintaining a broad product portfolio, the automaker is positioning itself to serve a wider range of customers while staying flexible as the market gradually shifts toward cleaner mobility.
