The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is moving to designate key parts of the Kalayaan Island Group as Marine Protected Areas, backed by nearly a decade of Philippine-led marine research. The initiative was highlighted at a recent symposium marking the 10th anniversary of the 2016 South China Sea Arbitral Award. Studies have confirmed rich biodiversity, including new fish species and seagrass beds, and noted the area can yield up to 2,000 metric tons of fish yearly to support food security. Research also flagged rapid erosion on Pag-asa Island linked to man-made structures. Alongside protection efforts, the DENR will set up nine research stations including one on Pag-asa Island to strengthen monitoring and sustainable management. Officials said proper stewardship of these waters is key to upholding national interests and securing resources for future generations.
