Mitsubishi backs EV roadmap with P7-billion hybrid investment

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. (MMPC) has endorsed the government’s newly launched Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy (EVIS), while reaffirming a P7-billion investment to locally manufacture hybrid electric vehicles, making it one of the first major automakers to commit production under the country’s new electrification roadmap.

The investment follows President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s issuance of Executive Order No. 121, which operationalizes the EVIS Program under the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act. The policy aims to accelerate electric vehicle adoption, strengthen domestic manufacturing and reduce the country’s dependence on imported fuels.

MMPC Chairman Noriaki Hirakata said the executive order provides the long-term policy certainty needed to encourage investments in cleaner mobility and expand the Philippine automotive industry.

“Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation welcomes the issuance of the Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy (EVIS) Executive Order, which marks an important milestone in advancing vehicle electrification and strengthening the automotive industry in the Philippines,” Hirakata said.

He said the company’s planned production of hybrid electric vehicles, backed by its parent Mitsubishi Motors Corp.’s P7-billion investment, demonstrates its commitment to supporting the government’s industrial and sustainability goals.

The investment is expected to boost domestic vehicle production, strengthen the local parts supply chain and generate new opportunities across the automotive value chain as demand for electrified vehicles continues to grow.

“Through this investment, we look forward to creating greater value for the Philippine economy, supporting the country’s sustainability objectives, generating opportunities across the automotive ecosystem, and contributing to the continued growth of local vehicle manufacturing,” Hirakata said.

Mitsubishi has operated in the Philippines since 1963 and currently manufactures the Mirage G4 and L300 at its 23-hectare plant in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, which has an annual production capacity of 50,000 units.

The commitment positions Mitsubishi among the early movers in the government’s EV manufacturing push, signaling that policy incentives are beginning to translate into fresh industrial investments that could help transform the Philippines from an import-driven vehicle market into a more competitive regional production hub.
