The Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Tourism (DOT) are expanding their joint effort to assess energy use and deliver support to hotels, resorts, and other tourism establishments. Under their partnership announced Tuesday, the agencies provide energy assessments, technical guidance, and financing access to help businesses cut costs while maintaining service quality. So far, 46 establishments in Metro Manila have undergone on-site evaluations, with 147 stakeholders from various sectors participating in related activities. Energy Secretary Sharon Garin emphasized that energy represents a major operating expense, and improving efficiency helps businesses manage costs without compromising guest comfort. Consultations identified key barriers including limited financing, training needs, and unclear audit guidelines, leading to connections with dedicated funding programs such as the Small Business Corporation’s Turismo Asenso Loan and Land Bank’s TOURISM Plus Lending Program. Industry leaders have also shared sustainable practices for wider adoption. Grounded in a March memorandum of agreement supporting the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act, the initiative translates policy into action, according to DOE’s Energy Utilization and Management Bureau Director Patrick Aquino. Following the Metro Manila rollout, the program expands to priority regions: Malay, Aklan from September 14 to 18, Cagayan de Oro City from September 28 to October 2, and La Union from October 12 to 16. These locations were selected for their high concentration of DOT-accredited establishments. The nationwide expansion aims to help more tourism businesses operate efficiently and responsibly while sustaining service quality and growth.
