Senior executives of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. (SMBC) and Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC) met recently to discuss market conditions, business priorities, and opportunities arising from closer economic ties between the Philippines and Japan.
The meeting was led by Toru Nakashima, president and group CEO of SMBC parent Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMFG), and RCBC Chairperson Helen Y. Dee, together with senior executives from both banks.
The visit comes as SMBC continues to expand its role in the Philippine banking market, which it considers one of its key growth markets in Asia under its Multi-Franchise Strategy.
SMBC increased its stake in RCBC to 24.46 percent in 2025, further aligning the two banks and giving RCBC greater access to SMBC’s international network.
The partnership is particularly relevant to Japanese companies operating or planning to invest in the Philippines. RCBC can tap SMBC’s global network to support cross-border transactions and other banking requirements, while SMBC gains a stronger connection to the local market through RCBC.
The two banks have also expanded cooperation beyond corporate banking to include consumer, digital, and retail banking, as well as business matching between their respective clients.
The relationship comes as the Philippines and Japan mark 70 years of diplomatic ties, with Japan remaining an important source of trade, investment, and business activity for the Philippines.
The partnership provides RCBC an avenue to broaden its international reach and serve clients with Japan-related business The investment in RCBC, meantime, strengthens SMBC’s local platform as it pursues growth in the Philippine market.
The latest executive meeting highlighted the banks’ intention to build on that relationship through closer coordination and more cross-border business opportunities.
