Eelos takes multi-use bags into crowded lifestyle market

Homegrown lifestyle brand Eelos is carving out a niche in the crowded bag market with multi-use designs aimed at people who move between work, exercise, and travel.

Founded by Gian Yap, Eelos takes its name from the Filipino word “kilos,” or movement, reflecting the brand’s focus on bags designed for multiple uses rather than a single activity.

The company’s product proposition centers on combining work, fitness, and travel functions in a single bag, with features designed to accommodate devices, clothing, and other everyday essentials.

“Every feature has to earn its place,” Yap said. “I always come back to the same question: does this make it easier for someone to move through their day?”

Its Duffel combines carrying capacity with water-resistant material and a minimalist design intended for use across different activities.

The Rollover Rucksack uses water-resistant vegan leather and includes separate laptop and tablet compartments, expandable side pockets, and a luggage sleeve.

But functionality alone may not be enough in a market filled with established local and international brands, many of which have broader distribution and larger marketing resources.

The challenge is to turn Eelos product proposition into a recognizable Filipino lifestyle brand while building a market beyond its initial customer base.

Yap sees an opportunity for homegrown brands to develop products from local experience and eventually bring those ideas to international markets.

“We can start with what we know, build something meaningful here, and eventually bring that point of view to a much bigger audience,” he said.

Eelos is now testing whether its “kilos” concept can translate from a product philosophy into a distinctive brand identity with room to grow beyond the Philippines.
