Nine hundred thirty-five Filipino air traffic management officers and controllers have completed comprehensive training using cutting-edge simulators from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, expanding the country’s skilled aviation workforce to manage national airspace safely and efficiently. Transportation Secretary Banoy Lopez confirmed the program is free for qualified applicants, built to sharpen both technical and decision-making skills needed for the job. The course combines classroom learning on aviation standards with hands-on practice in realistic simulated air traffic scenarios.
Lopez noted the agency’s modern aerodrome simulator is truly high-tech, and graduates are guaranteed jobs as air traffic controllers at airports nationwide. As they refine their abilities, they will match the proficiency of controllers worldwide. CAAP Air Traffic Service Officer-in-Charge Melba Acurantes contrasted today’s setup with earlier manual methods that relied on floor drawings and toy planes to illustrate movements. The agency launched its 315-degree simulator in 2020, which became fully operational in 2024; a newer 360-degree version was inaugurated in July 2026 and will serve the 21st batch of trainees later this year.
These advanced platforms replicate real-world conditions, letting trainees handle varied traffic flows, emergencies, and changing weather in a controlled setting. The shift to digital simulation makes training far more immersive and practical, building deeper grasp of complex operational demands. CAAP says this technology upgrade is central to raising training quality, producing controllers who meet international benchmarks and keep Philippine skies safe and efficient.
