The Philippines is spearheading an initiative to establish a unified tourism intelligence platform within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) that would give member states access to timely data, market forecasts and analytics to strengthen planning, marketing and crisis response.
Tourism Undersecretary Verna Buensuceso said the initiative is part of the ASEAN Tourism Sectoral Plan (ATSP) 2026-2030, which was completed with the Philippines serving as lead country coordinator and rolled out during the ASEAN Tourism Forum in Cebu in January.
A key component is the ASEAN Tourism Intelligence Initiative, which the Philippines is advancing with Malaysia as co-coordinator. The proposal received unanimous support from ASEAN member states during the second ASEAN Tourism Ministers Retreat on Sept. 29.
“The idea here is to establish a unified regional data platform that is envisioned to empower every member state of ASEAN, regardless of their international technical capacity, with equal access to high-frequency analytics, precise market forecasting and evidence-based insights needed for data-driven tourism planning,” Buensuceso said at the opening of the 37th National Statistics Month.
The proposed platform is also intended to help governments allocate tourism marketing budgets more efficiently and respond faster to disruptions and crises, giving policymakers a shared view of changing travel patterns across the region.
Under the broader ATSP, ASEAN plans to strengthen tourism intelligence by linking regional outlooks with a shared data dashboard, improving the collection of globally comparable statistics and eventually incorporating big data and other emerging sources.
For the Philippines, the initiative supports its push for evidence-based tourism governance while seeking to align ASEAN tourism statistics more closely with global standards.
“Let us not simply collect numbers. Let us understand them, use them, and most importantly, turn them into meaningful action,” Buensuceso said.
The initiative could give ASEAN governments a more coordinated basis for tourism policy and investment decisions as the region seeks to improve the use of data in managing growth, marketing destinations and responding to shocks.
