Ayala Malls expands solar rollout across more locations, boosting clean energy shift

Ayala Malls is scaling up its rooftop solar installations across its properties, accelerating the move toward renewable energy as it builds more sustainable spaces.

The solar projects form a core part of the group’s sustainability plans, woven directly into how malls are designed and run. Thirteen locations already host working systems, including Ayala Malls Manila Bay, Ayala Center Cebu, Ayala Malls Nuvali, and MarQuee Mall. Together these generate about 20.8 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity every year, cutting around 16,200 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Another 18 sites are set to join the program, among them Glorietta, Greenbelt, One Ayala, Ayala Malls Vertis North, and new developments Ayala Malls Evo City and Gatewalk. Once fully operational, these will add 29.4 million kWh per year and prevent an extra 22,940 tonnes of CO2 from being released.

“Solar is one of the ways we reduce our environmental footprint. It’s part of our diversified approach — combining on-site generation with clean power sourcing to support long-term clean energy performance across our malls,” said Paul Birkett, Chief Operating Officer of Ayala Malls.

Renewable sources already make up 98% of electricity used across all Ayala Malls properties, backed by accredited suppliers and verified through International Renewable Energy Certificates. Rooftop solar builds on this foundation, letting the company produce its own clean power and opening the door to long-term cost savings.

This focus on sustainability runs through every part of the business design. Open layouts, glass walls, and skylights maximize natural light and cut lighting needs. Green spaces offer room to breathe. Recycled water from restrooms and retail areas is reused to help run air conditioning systems.

“As Ayala Malls continues to grow, we’re ensuring sustainability remains integral to how we operate — ensuring our tenants are set up to succeed, everyone who walks through our malls stays engaged, and our spaces stay resilient and future-ready,” Birkett added.

For Ayala Malls, responsible business means creating spaces that work better for both people and the planet.
