Geely Monjaro EM-i set for Philippine launch after Sahara record

Geely Motor Philippines is preparing to expand its electrified vehicle lineup with the upcoming launch of the Monjaro EM-i, a D-segment plug-in hybrid SUV aimed at the growing local market for hybrid and electric vehicles.

The Philippine introduction follows a high-profile test in Egypt, where the Monjaro EM-i secured a Guinness World Records title in September for the “fastest crossing of Egypt’s Black and White Deserts in the Sahara by a plug-in hybrid powered production SUV.”

The SUV completed the 188.6-kilometer route continuously, navigating extreme heat and demanding desert terrain. According to Geely, the run tested the vehicle’s handling and stability, steep-slope climbing, cross-axle recovery, ride comfort and acceleration even at a low state of charge.

The Monjaro EM-i pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged hybrid-specific gasoline engine with electric drive, delivering up to 250 kilowatts of system power and 667 Newton-meters of torque. It also features Geely’s intelligent electric all-wheel-drive system, which varies torque distribution according to road conditions.

Other technology includes Continuous Damping Control suspension and an intelligent power-management system designed to optimize the vehicle’s hybrid powertrain.

For Geely, the model represents a move into the larger and more premium D-segment SUV category while adding another electrified option to its Philippine portfolio.

The company is expected to give selected Philippine automotive media an early look at the Monjaro EM-i during a media drive in Northern Luzon this October. The event will precede the SUV’s formal local launch, where pricing, specifications and availability are expected to be detailed.
