BIR grants P149M tax relief to micro taxpayers

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has granted P149.35 million in tax relief to 2,379 micro taxpayers in three months, as participation in its one-time tax abatement program accelerates ahead of the Dec. 31, 2026 deadline.

The BIR received 10,229 applications as of Oct. 3, with 8,464 approved, translating to an approval rate of nearly 83 percent.

Applications have gained momentum, with 1,027 taxpayers—43 percent of all beneficiaries—availing themselves of the program in the latest 15-day period alone.

The relief covered P28.24 million in basic taxes and P121.12 million in compromise penalties. The government also collected P42.32 million in abatement fees.

BIR Commissioner Charlito Martin Mendoza credited intensified information campaigns and assistance from Revenue Regions and Revenue District Offices nationwide for the increase in participation.

“Mas marami na tayong naaabot na micro taxpayers, at mas marami na rin ang gumagamit ng pagkakataong ito para maayos ang kanilang mga obligasyon at makabalik sa regular na compliance,” Mendoza said.

The program allows qualified micro taxpayers with covered liabilities of no more than P80,000 per taxable year to settle eligible cases by paying a fixed abatement fee of P5,000 per tax type per taxable year.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. highlighted the initiative in his 2026 State of the Nation Address as part of efforts to help small taxpayers settle outstanding obligations and return to compliance.

To make payment more accessible, the BIR has also enabled transactions through its updated Offline eBIRForms Package.

Mendoza urged eligible taxpayers to take advantage of the one-time relief program before it expires on Dec. 31, 2026.
