The Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) said Davao Fish Port Complex officials have met with the Consulate General of Indonesia in Davao City last week to discuss a proposed partnership at the port with Indonesian fisherfolk and fishing boat operators.
PFDA said in a statement the discussion points include an opportunity for Indonesian fish workers to transship, trade and process their tuna catch at the port.
The parties to the discussion include Albert Aguinaldo, Davao Fish Port Complex manager, and Harya Kakerasana Sidharta, officer-in-charge consulate general and consul for protocol and consul affairs of Indonesia, as well as with Novita Supit, consul for economic affairs also of Indonesia.
The PFDA said the parties also discussed the Talaud island regency, at which is located a marine sanctuary for tuna and similar species strategically proximate to the Davao Fish Port Complex.
The parties said a partnership now being arranged between the parties will allow fisherfolk and fishing boat operators from the island to conduct their operations at the Davao port.
In December, the PFDA said the port complex posted the highest percentage increase in fish catch of 1,215.12 metric tons (MT) or a 175.92 percent jump from 440.39 MT the previous November.
The Philippines caught 218,476.21 MT of bigeye tuna, eastern little tuna, frigate tuna and yellowfin tuna in 2022, based on data from the Philippine Statistics Authority.
Of the volume, Davao contributed 7,375.83 MT or 3.38 percent of the country’s total tuna production for the period.
