    DA releases initial damage estimates due Typhoon Carina

    Damage to agriculture due the combined impact of southwest monsoon and typhoon Carina is initially estimated at P156.79 million, according to the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Operations Center.

    The DA attached agency said supertyphoon Carina wrought damage on 1,096 metric tons (MT) of goods tended by 7,677 farmers and fisherfolk on 8,821 hectares of farm land as of 12 noon Wednesday.

    Crop DA damage were reported mostly in Mimaropa, Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Caraga and Soccsksargen.

    The bulk of Carina’s damage was on 856 MT of rice worth an estimated P145.36 million and on 219 MT of high value crops worth P8.5 million.

    An estimated 21 MT of corn worth P2.85 million was also damaged alongside 2,323 heads of livestock worth P80,900. 

    The DA distributed 72,174 bags of rice seeds, 39,546 bags of corn seeds 59,600 pouches and 1,966 kilograms of vegetable seeds to farmers and fisherfolk.

    The agency also made available the Agricultural Credit Policy Council’s Survival and Recovery Loan program of up to P25,000 payable in three years at zero interest, a quick response fund for the rehabilitation of affected areas, and indemnification from the Philippine Crop Insurance Corp.
