The Philippines has been selected as one of 50 countries to receive a Pandemic Fund Grant aimed at strengthening the country’s ability to prevent, detect, and respond to future health crises, particularly those affecting animals and humans alike. This funding will enhance the nation’s preparedness and response capabilities in the face of potential pandemics.
Dr. Constante Palabrica, assistant secretary for swine and poultry, lauded the Department of Agriculture (DA) for its determination in securing the grant. “Although the Philippines was initially unsuccessful in its application last year, the DA’s persistence in reapplying has paid off,” said Palabrica. “This grant will significantly bolster our pandemic preparedness and also help fortify the agricultural sector, which is particularly vulnerable during outbreaks. By securing this funding, we are taking vital steps toward building a more resilient Philippines capable of protecting both public health and food security.”
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu-Laurel Jr. also emphasized the wide-ranging benefits of the grant for the agriculture sector. “The Pandemic Fund is a game-changer for the Philippines. It will not only enhance our ability to respond to future pandemics but will also ensure the continuity of essential sectors like agriculture. By investing in disease surveillance, early warning systems, and health infrastructure, we are safeguarding food security, protecting our farmers, and ensuring the well-being of the Filipino people.”
The grant will allow the Philippines to invest in key areas such as disease surveillance, early warning systems, laboratory infrastructure, and the development of a skilled workforce, all critical to ensuring both public health and agricultural resilience in the face of future crises.
