MRT-3 to deploy four-car trains by June

The Metro Rail Transit (MRT) Line 3 is set to boost its passenger capacity by deploying four-car trains starting June this year. MRT-3 general manager Oscar Bongon announced that this move is part of the ongoing maintenance efforts led by Sumitomo Corp., which will conclude by mid-2025.

The planned improvements, including the extension of the pocket track at Taft Station in Pasay City and the turnback facility at North Avenue Station, will allow for the addition of extra cars to each train. This change is expected to increase capacity by 33 percent, significantly improving the daily commute for thousands of passengers.

MRT-3’s ridership reached over 135 million in 2024, surpassing the previous year’s total of 129 million, underscoring the growing demand for efficient public transportation. The upgrades, backed by a P7.38-billion contract extension signed in May 2023, will further improve service quality and reduce congestion.

This development holds great significance for both commuters and the economy. By accommodating more passengers, the expanded capacity will help alleviate overcrowding, making daily commutes smoother and more reliable. Additionally, the enhanced service aligns with the government’s push to improve public transportation infrastructure, contributing to the overall efficiency of Metro Manila’s transit system.
