Meralco brings solar-powered solutions to Nueva Ecija farmers

Meralco’s corporate social responsibility arm, One Meralco Foundation (OMF), has provided solar-powered mobile irrigation pumps to two cooperatives in Nueva Ecija, marking a significant step toward sustainability in the region’s agriculture. The Lupao Pag-ahon Agriculture Cooperative and the Nueva Ecija Rice, Corn, Vegetable, and Livestock Raisers Multi-Purpose Cooperative, representing around 140 farmers, will now no longer rely on costly diesel-powered pumps for irrigation.

The shift to solar technology is especially vital during the dry season, when access to water is limited, and farmers face high fuel costs—around P12,000 per cropping cycle. This initiative not only alleviates financial burdens but also enhances the resilience of local agriculture, enabling continuous irrigation without environmental strain. OMF president Jeffrey Tarayao highlighted the importance of fostering innovation in farming communities to support food security and economic growth.

Supported by Meralco’s employees and the Meralco Employees Fund for Charity Inc., the project forms part of a broader effort to electrify rural areas and improve agricultural livelihoods across the country. This symbolic donation exemplifies the power of sustainable energy in transforming communities and empowering farmers.
