Aboitiz InfraCapital, Inc. (AIC), the infrastructure arm of the Aboitiz Group, is set to take over the facilities, buildings, and land of Laguindingan International Airport in a phased handover process within April. The transition marks a significant milestone for both the airport and the region’s economic development.
The P12.75 billion concession agreement, signed in October 2024, gives AIC a 30-year mandate to operate and modernize the airport, marking it as the first successful airport public-private partnership project under the current administration. This development is expected to significantly boost economic activity in Mindanao by enhancing connectivity, supporting local businesses, and increasing the airport’s capacity to handle growing passenger traffic.
AIC aims to transform Laguindingan International Airport into a world-class gateway, with plans for expanding and upgrading both airside and landside facilities. The passenger terminal will undergo renovation, modern equipment will be installed, and infrastructure improvements will elevate the passenger experience while enhancing safety and operational efficiency. Expansion efforts will increase the airport’s capacity from 1.6 million to as much as 6.3 million passengers annually.
Rafael M. Aboitiz, AIC vice president for airports business, emphasized the project’s role in driving Mindanao’s economic progress, with plans to create a seamless and efficient transition process, minimizing disruptions and ensuring operational continuity.
AIC, already known for its successful management of Mactan-Cebu International Airport, has laid out plans to replicate this success with Laguindingan and Bohol-Panglao International Airport, the latter scheduled for a June 2025 takeover. These strategic initiatives are part of AIC’s broader vision to uplift the standards of Philippine aviation and foster commercial growth across the region.
